Cocina Tradicional - Las Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan

Las Cuatro Milpas' -- or "The Four Cornfields" introduced its "home style" Mexican food to the masses in 1933 as a means to make ends during the Great Depression. Its simple, efficient and the recipes have remained the same, an Estudillo Family secret.

You know a place is good when Mexicans are eating at a Mexican restaurant and raving about the place to their American friends and telling them, "...its the best in town."

The IQuit Crew went. Our party of four had one Las Cuatro Milpas virgin. So, you want to know what the virgin thought:

"Eh! It was good, which is a good thing. Nothing to write home about (not that the Philippines would care) but it wasn't fancy, flavors are true and authentic. I wasn't a big fan of the beans, but loved the rice (of course). The TORTILLAS are amazing! I just wanted to wrap myself in them and twirl around in circles in Chicano Park - but we were limited to a half dozen purchase, so that wouldn't work."

Running out of food, is their goal and possible from what I heard mummbled among the regulars between bean and rice porridge slurps - apparently Menudo is worth waiting in line for.

There is a reason why it has been open since 1933 and there is a line every single day. Cheap and REAL Mexican food. No matter which restaurant or taco shop you visit, it all has a American spin on it - "California Burrito" what is that?!?!? Not this place! Its just the way Mi Abuelita would make it, if I were Mexican.

Go there. CASH ONLY 1857 Logan Ave. San Diego 92113
